According to the latest report from "The Block", the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has reached an agreement to acquire the prediction market startup The Clearing Company, continues to deepen its layout in the field of "event-based trading" as an important part of its overall strategy of promoting "everything exchange".
Coinbase deepens prediction market layout
The announcement of this acquisition comes as Coinbase officially launched the prediction market function on the platform last week, allowing users to trade on real-world events such as election results, macroeconomic data, and sports events in the same interface, further expanding its product line: from encrypted assets, derivatives and stocks, to a more interactive event-based market.
The deal is still subject to general closing conditions and is expected to close in January next year, according to Coinbase. A Coinbase spokesperson said the transaction amount did not meet the materiality threshold required to be disclosed, so the specific amount was not disclosed, and confirmed that the consideration for the acquisition was composed of a mixture of cash and Coinbase stock. Upon completion of the transaction, nearly the entire team at The Clearing Company will join Coinbase to help scale its prediction markets products.
Coinbase also revealed that its prediction market currently operates through regulated trading channels and introduced Kalshi as a liquidity source in the early stages. In the future, it will gradually expand the types of markets and platforms it supports and continue to strengthen related services.
What is The Clearing Company?
The Clearing Company was founded this year by Toni Gemayel. Gemayel previously worked at the well-known prediction market platforms Polymarket and Kalshi, and held key growth-related positions. The company completed a $15 million seed round in August this year, with investors including Coinbase Ventures. The goal is to build an "on-chain, compliant, regulated" prediction market infrastructure to allow event-based transactions to operate more efficiently on the blockchain.
Gemayel said that joining Coinbase will allow the team’s products and experience to reach a wider user base. He pointed out that the key to maximizing the value of the prediction market lies in the combination of market structure and traffic distribution, and Coinbase's global user base is an important condition for promoting the scale of this type of market.
It is worth mentioning that this acquisition also becomes the tenth merger announced by Coinbase in 2025, showing that the company is actively accelerating the expansion of product boundaries and new financial application scenarios through external mergers and acquisitions. As cryptocurrency exchanges compete to find growth momentum beyond spot trading, prediction markets are gradually becoming the next battleground.
