Is Grok going to replace Wikipedia? Musk revealed that xAI is developing “Grokipedia”: a huge improvement over Wikipedia
Tesla founder Musk revealed that xAI is building "Grokipedia", saying that he will use AI to revolutionize the field of knowledge sharing and challenge Wiki's hegemony.
(Preliminary news: Musk xAI enters the US government! Federal agencies will integrate Grok, and the annual fee of US$0.42 is half of OpenAI’s asking price)
(Background supplement: Is it unexpected? Musk’s $1 billion purchase of Tesla shares is just one of the scenarios in 2025)
David Sacks, the cryptocurrency and AI czar appointed by US President Trump, on September 30 In a post posted on the social platform Sacks emphasized that this not only harms the accuracy of online knowledge, but also amplifies the problem: Wikipedia often ranks first in Google searches and has become a reliable source for AI model training. If the encyclopedia content cannot be properly corrected, it will cause a "huge problem."
Musk: xAI is developing “Grokipedia”
Sacks’ post quickly aroused heated discussion. Later, Tesla founder Elon Musk also forwarded the post and revealed that the AI startup xAI he leads is developing an alternative platform (or function) called “Grokipedia”, vowing to replace Wikipedia. Musk wrote on
Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia.
Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe. https://t.co/xvSeWkpALy

It is worth mentioning that Musk revealed on the All-In Podcast on September 10 that xAI will upgrade its chat robot Grok: based on Grok, it will be upgraded to a multi-agent reasoning architecture, allowing AI to actively crawl and compare wiki pages, books, PDFs and websites, and then use synthetic data to automatically review the authenticity of the content. The core process consists of four steps: identifying controversial passages, cross-verifying sources, removing false or half-true information, filling in missing context, and finally outputting a "revised version of the article."
Musk emphasized that this is not only a "direct challenge" to Wikipedia, but also a key step in realizing xAI's core mission, which is "understanding the true nature of the universe." In addition, unlike Wikipedia which relies on human crowdsourcing, Grokipedia emphasizes real-time AI review in parallel with user co-editing. xAI plans to make the Grok update results public, allowing external researchers to examine the algorithm logic and reduce "black box" concerns.
The community has mixed reviews
However, it is worth noting that the community’s response to Musk’s plan is currently polarized. Supporters praise Grokipedia for being able to "fight censors" and look forward to implementing "facts first" into article updates through public algorithms and multi-source comparisons. Some technology practitioners also believe that AI can quickly scan large texts and make up for the blind spots of human review, which is expected to improve the accuracy rate.
But the opposition is equally strong. Critics worry that Musk's personal preferences may infiltrate Grok, turning Grokipedia into an encyclopedia from "Musk's perspective" or forming a right-leaning version of Wikipedia. Because in the past, Grok has been pointed out many times for being biased in its answers or omitting negative issues related to Musk, showing that AI neutrality is not an easy task.
